26th Annual Walk & Roll to School Day

Norte invites northern Michigan families to join thousands worldwide in a walk or roll to school on Wednesday, October 12.

Traverse City, MI. Local schools across northern Michigan will participate in International Walk & Roll to School Day on October 12. The annual fall event promotes human-powered transportation to encourage good health, strengthen the community, and ease traffic congestion.

“Walk and Roll to School Day is about empowering kids and providing them with a fun way to learn all sorts of great life skills, like planning, community building, street safety, and independence,” said Rachel Goodman. Goodman is a PTO board member at TCAPS Montessori. “It allows kids and parents an opportunity to slow down and reconnect with what’s around them, and with other kids and adults.”

Active trips to school enable students to fit in regular physical activity while also forming healthy habits. These healthy habits will last a lifetime. Research also shows that students who walk or roll to school arrive better prepared to learn.

“We’re thrilled to participate in Walk & Roll to School Day again,” said Norte Executive Director Jill Sill. “We encourage everyone to walk, bike, scooter, or skip your way to school — or work — not only on October 12 but every day. We know that morning movement develops bodies and brains that are ready to learn.”

All pre-K to 12th-grade students — plus teachers, staff, and principals — are welcome to join the celebration. Norte asks participants to commit to joining at their website. In addition to their own participation, participants may pledge as a team. From the results, Norte will award schools for going above and beyond. Last fall, the Most Walk-tastic Award went to the Old Mission Peninsula School.

“Winning the Most Walk-tastic Award was awesome for our school!” said Old Mission Principal Renee Kolle. “It brought together the community, as we were able to utilize a drop-off site at the community library. Our neighbors graciously volunteer their property for us to walk on. As a result, lots more movement is happening — and we love it!”
