The Norte Wheelhouse

A Grand Traverse Learning Center

Norte loves calling the Civic Center home, and we reflect fondly on how it all began in the Clubhouse. We’re even more thrilled that our partnership with Grand Traverse Parks and Recreation includes the Wheelhouse along Front St. on the north end of the park.

You can find the Wheelhouse in the Civic Center near the skate park. If you’re driving, we recommend parking on Fair Street or at Howe Arena. It’s a short 2-minute walk from the latter.

For the Wheelhouse, we transformed a historic Old Northwest Michigan Fairgrounds building into a new community space for learning. Like other learning centers, the now very orange Wheelhouse teaches and reinforces bike education through various programs and independent and self-directed learning activities.

  1. Norte’s Programs: Adventure Bike Club, Bikes for All, our Mountain Bike program, and the Traverse City Summer Camp.
  2. The Grand Traverse Kids’ Bike Library: Ensuring awesome kids have excellent bikes no matter their family’s resources.
  3. The Solution: A community learn-to-wrench initiative featuring bike mechanics classes, community events, and an apprenticeship for high schoolers.

In the future, we will include a Traffic Garden. The Norte Traffic Garden will be a much-needed addition to our Safe Routes To School program and allow elementary students to learn bike safety skills in a safe setting.

As Norte continues to grow, the Wheelhouse and a future brand new learning center depend on your generosity to create a safe, dynamic, and welcoming community space. Please support the Wheelhouse today and join the list of awesome people who believe in happy, healthy, ready-to-learn kids.
