EL LIDERATO:
A TRAVERSE CITY YOUTH LEADERSHIP COUNCIL
At Norte!, we believe young people are to be seen, heard, and valued by their community. We believe in their abilities to take action when they’re given the opportunity, and that their contribution makes both Traverse City and Team Orange stronger. Norte! is committed to not just being youth-centric, but youth-driven too. El Liderato empowers young people to stand up, speak up, get involved and do good in their community.
Our Youth Leadership Council is made up of a small group of awesome young men and women aged 13 – 18 who are dedicated to helping Norte! advocate for a stronger, better connected and more bicycle friendly Traverse City.
El Liderato members commit to a one year term and attend either a 1 hour meeting or a 1 hour volunteer event per month.
- Meetings involve planning projects, organizing events, advising staff on programs and participating in leadership activities.
- Volunteering involves:
- mentoring the little kids at events like The Bike Mas Project, El Barrio Bike Fix, Estrellas or Vasa Domingos
- helping at the Clubhouse, our community bike shop
- assisting a community outreach events like the Bike Valet, Adventurama!, Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day or Bike Night at the Bijou.
Why get involved with El Liderato?
In addition to all the community building awesomeness above and looking real good on future job and college applications, our Youth Leadership Council members and graduates will also have the opportunity to earn money via paid gigs including being a summer camp counselor at The Bike Mas Project and working our many Bike Valet events. We are also exploring a bike mechanic apprenticeship program to teach the skills needed to be employable at bike shops.
