Mini/Junior Speed of Light: A Weekly Summertime Mountain Bike “Race” for Kids in Traverse City
We’re excited to partner with our amazing cycling community including Kolo TC , Northern Michigan Mountain Bike Association, Q+M, Munson Medical Sports Team, Keen Racing, McLain Cycles, City Bike Shop, Einstein Cycles, Suttons Bay Bikes, Brick Wheels, Bike Leelanau, Universal Racing, M22, and Hagerty Cycling to help put on the 2019 Mini and Junior Speed of Light (SOL) “race” series this summer.
This laid-back, super fun and super not so serious “race” series is a great way to ride bikes on dirt, meet new friends, get fit, explore the woods, build confidence and have FUN! all summer long.
Probably eat some snacks after, too.
WHEN IS THIS “RACE” SERIES?
Every Thursday evening this summer starting June 13th.
WHERE DO WE MEET?
The split rail fence on the 25K Vasa Pathway. Park in the lot off Bartlett Road and cruise the 1/2 mile or so to the fence where the SOL starts/finishes.
WHO CAN “RACE”?
Mini SOL is ideal for kids in elementary school
Junior SOL is perfect for kids in middle and high school.
All ages and abilities are welcome.
While the Mini SOL course is marked with BLUE arrows, this is not a guided ride. We 100% support kids who know their way and have the necessary skills to ride alone/sans adult but we ask that parents ride with their child if not.
The Junior SOL route is not marked. It’s basically the 25K Vasa loop, so it’s easy to follow but it is a good idea to practice it once or twice at Vasa Domingos.
HOW FAR IS THE “RACE”?
Mini SOL: a hilly 5-ish miles
Junior SOL: a hilly 12-ish miles
IS THIS “RACE” FREE?
You betcha. No need to sign up either. Just show up. Bring a friend or three too.
AWESOME! HOW CAN I HELP?
We need mucho quality big people to make this thing run smoothly. Keep time, ride or sweep the Mini SOL on one Thursday evening or many Thursdays evenings. We’d love to have you and will repay with free high-fives all summer long. Sign up to help HERE. Read how it is supposed to work HERE.
WILL YOU BE KEEPING TRACK OF “RACE” SERIES RESULTS?
Yes! But you gotta self-report.
Juniors are responsible for timing themselves and reporting their times in the form below
The timekeeper will give the Mini’s their time at the end of their “race”. Minis have to enter their time here when they get home:
HUGE THANKS TO KOLO TC FOR SUPPORTING HAPPY, HEALTHY, STRONG KIDS ON BIKES!
