We are STOKED to have been invited to present at the International Winter Cycling Conference in Montreal this week. Kind of a big deal!

Here’s our presentation abstract:

How can elementary school students stay Happy, healthy and ready-to-learn through the winter in snowy Traverse City, Michigan? With support from City officials who are dedicated to keeping streets and trails cleared, school district leadership and principals who pedal to class with their students, a generous community that donates bikes to a kids winter bike “library” and a grassroots bike plow champion who is passionate about making the commute to school safe for kids, Norte!, a youth-focused, bike-centric nonprofit advocacy organization, is shifting habits and behaviors about year round active transportation in this small Northern Michigan town. Encouraging more kids to bike to school has inspired people of all ages to keep moving even though the winter which boasts an average annual snowfall of 259 cm. Traverse City has earned back to back Top 20 finishes in International Winter Bike To Work Day. Not too bad for a town of just 15,000.

Like to do ordinary things – go to work, school, to the store or library – on your bicycle in Traverse City during the winter? Share a photo for our presentation.

Bike Valet Coming To The Traverse City Film Festival

IMG_1576

With generous support from our friends at Higher Grounds Trading Co., we are thrilled to provide bike valet parking at this year’s Traverse City Film Festival.

No need to deal with traffic or stress out about where to park the car. Our centrally located, TART Trail-side bike valet at the Bijou is convenient, easy, fast, secure and awesome.

Perfect not only for Bijou film goers but also a lovely “Bike & Stroll” experience for those going to The State, Opera House, The Woz at Indigo Hotel or The Open Space. It’s no more than a 5 minute walk from the bike valet to all of these TCFF venues!

Dates/Times: 7/26 – 31. Opens at 8a. Closes at 11p.

Location: At the amazing Bijou by the Bay on the TART Trail in beautiful Clinch Park.

How It Works:

1. Ride your bike down to the Bijou.
2. Give us your bike and we’ll give you one of our snazzy Pokemon turned valet stub. Put the Pokemon in your pocket. Don’t lose it.
3. Stroll to your film venue. We’ll watch your bike. So have fun. Don’t worry.
4. Return to the valet. Give us your Pokemon. Get your bike back.
5. Pedal on down to Higher Grounds in the Village for a free daily brew. Did you know Coast, HG’s seasonal summer blend which benefits Norte!, is the official coffee of the TCFF? Awesome, right?
6. Share your bike-y Traverse City Film Festival adventures with #BikeTCFF

We’re looking for some awesome people to help volunteer at the valet. Sign up for a short but sweet and super fun shift HERE.

Shop Your Local Bike Shop Day

shopyourlocalbikeshopday

Norte! is a firm believer that local bike shops play a mucho important role in bicycle friendly towns.

Like People For Bikes recently wrote, “To many people, bike shops exist to do repairs and sell bicycles and components to customers. Shops can also serve another equally important purpose: as a hub for advocacy within their community. Through support of infrastructure and other bike-friendly policies, retailers help make bike riding better in their communities.”

As part of our TC Bike Month events, we’re excited to host the inaugural Shop You Local Bike Shop Day as a way to acknowledge and support our many wonderful shops here in Traverse City.

So ride on down to McLain Cycle & Fitness, Einstein Cycles, Brick Wheels, City Bike Shop or GT Cycle and show them some love tomorrow.

Give ’em a high five for being awesome. Get your bike tuned up. Maybe snag a new bell. Or a basket. New helmet could be awesome too. And let them know that you appreciate their support of a bike-tastic Traverse City.

Bike TC Tshirts designed by the talented Tee See Tee are just in and they’re awesome. Get yours at participating bike shops tomorrow. 100% of proceeds to support our bike-centric, youth-focused programs.

Winter Bike To Work and School Day 2016: A Traverse City Photo Gallery

12744601_523667894481342_4878484264696520654_n

Winter Bike To Work and School Day lived up to its name here in northern Michigan. A blustery, snowy, and utterly frigid day with white out conditions in the afternoon made for treacherous conditions. With smart clothing choices and mucho grit,  Traverse City impressed. Again. We had 114 awesome people commit to pedal to work and school today. That’s more than any other city in the US. We think that’s pretty awesome.

High fives to the organizers at Winter Bike To Work/School Day HQ. We love you guys. We’ve really enjoyed being a part of this worldwide celebration of people on bicycles embracing winter. Zagreb, Oulu, Novi Sad, Saint-Petersburg, Calgary, Montréal, Moscow, Toronto, Edmonton, Almaty Helsinki, Winnipeg, and Bergen. Thanks for the inspiration. Keep awesome and let’s do it again next year.

The Estrellas: A Learn To Ride pilot program

photo (1)

Norte! is for kids on bikes in Traverse City no matter their age. We are also huge fans of balance bikes and believe that there is no better way to teach children how to ride.

The Estrellas is Norte!’s balance bike squad dedicated to helping preschoolers experience the joy of wheels.

After a successful summer campaign of balance bikes meet-ups at F&M park, we’re excited to launch a new learn-to-ride pilot program in partnership with TCAPS.

Starting this February, we will host two 30 minute sessions a week at Eastern Elementary to teach their preschoolers how to ride.

In addition to our Safe Routes To School funded programs, The Great Traverse City Bike Train Experiment, The Bike Mas Project and El Barrio Bike Fix, The Estrellas is another wonderful opportunity to build bike culture at Eastern and encourage more students to be active, healthy, and ready-to-learn.

Photo gallery:

Thanks to the generous support of McLain Cycles and Brick Wheels, Norte! has a small fleet of balance bikes and matching helmets but we’re always looking for more. If you have a balance bike collecting dust, please consider donating it (tax exempt, of course) to Norte!. We’ll promise to put it to good use.

We are also looking for a few quality adults to help volunteer on Wednesday mornings (sessions are 9:30-10 & 10-10:30) for the month of February. No balance bike experience needed, just a willingness to have fun and help the kids learn. A TCAPS background check is also required.

Volunteers should sign up HERE

A Norte! Story: Ryan Bikes Happy At Conquer The Village

ryan

Meet Ryan. Ryan  is a 7th grader at East Middle School. We first met Ryan this spring at our weekly urban mountain bike shred, Fridays@TheCommons. Ryan showed up week after week, put in the time, worked hard and transformed himself into a legit mountain biker. In less than awesome weather, Ryan put those skills on display at the Conquer The Village race.

We asked Ryan to share his experience with us. Here’s his story:

Conquering The Village With Norte!
by: Ryan Miller

The first bike ride I went to with Norte! was a Fridays@TheCommons. I was kind of nervous because I did not know anyone.  But I have to say,I enjoyed it because everyone was really nice and they showed me where to go.  After that first Fridays@TheCommons, I realized that mountain biking was something I would be able to work for and I liked doing.
Then I heard about the Conquer the Village Race. Mr. Schmidt told me it would be in about one month. He said if I really wanted a Norte! jersey, I could get one if I did this race. I REALLY liked that bright orange jersey and having one would make me part of this bike team.
The week before the race, I looked up the weather. It was forecasted to be rainy and cold.  I knew that I didn’t really care about the weather and that it would be a blast to get muddy and wet.  I knew that the conditions downhill would be slick.
Race day came and Mr. Schmidt handed me my orange jersey. I put it on and I was feeling psyched.  Seeing the news cameras and hearing the loud music got me nervous and pumped up. We lined up and it was mostly a sea of orange jerseys. I went out hard to get ahead and I hit the first hill and got into a good pace. It was pouring rain and my glasses were covered in raindrops and I could hardly see.
I had to do 5 laps.  On the fourth lap I was starting to hit the wall. But as I rounded the start of the fifth lap, the music and the DJ announcer yelling “Last lap!” got me pumped. I floored it for the last lap and my head was light and fuzzy and my body was aching.  I came into the finish covered in mud and shaking cold and totally stoked to keep on mountain biking. I am hooked. Thanks Norte!.
