Food By Bicycle Challenge

According to People On Bikes, 79% of all trips by bicycle taken by adults lead to or from somewhere other than work. Mainly these are trips involving food, like to the grocery, market, or bakery. The Food By Bicycle Challenge is a celebration of these culinary slow rolls.

With COVID-19 keeping us close to home and sharing more meals than ever with our loved ones, let’s roll out another April with Food by Bicycle. Let’s do this responsibly, keeping a distance and staying safe by covering our mouths and washing our hands. We also encourage everyone to be efficient with trips and stay aware of any new conditions of the stay home order.

How the Food by Bicycle Challenge Works

Ride your bike to local groceries, market, bakery, or, in light of the current situation, take-out places. Check-in, tag Norte and win prizes. Simple. “Winners” will be randomly selected and notified by May 3.

  1. Ride – Ride your bicycle to any of our many Northern Michigan grocery stores, bakeries, or (hopefully soon) farmers’ markets.
  2. Tag Norte – Choose your favorite social media outlet and tag Norte to be entered into our Food by Bicycle Challenge to win some sweet prizes. Think Norte swag or entries into Adventurama or our summer camp.
  3. Celebrate – Pat yourself on the back for supporting Northern Michigan businesses and doing so by the most efficient transportation invention ever, the bicycle.

The Food By Bicycle Challenge starts at dawn on April 1 and finishes at dusk on April 30. There is no limit on the number of times you can enter. More food by bicycle = better chance of winning.

Special prizes! We are also choosing prizes for most Norte Business Champions visited by bike and who shares the most impressive image of their bike parked at a Norte Bike Rack.

You must check-in at the destination and tag Norte to be entered into the end of the month drawing. Use FacebookTwitter, or InstagramDo you Strava? We’d love to see the routes you use to get to the stores/markets. Join Norte’s Strava Club.

The Food by Bicycle Challenge was inspired by Lana Stewart’s fantastic Pecha Kucha presentation at the 2017 Winter Cycling Congress in Montreal. We are thrilled to continue the tradition in Northern Michigan.

Thank you to all of the essential businesses and critical workers keeping Northern Michigan fed during this stressful time. We appreciate you and are showering you with virtual high-fives!
