Let’s Make Long Lake Elementary Walk/Bike-tastic
Awesome news! Safe Routes to School is coming to Long Lake Elementary!
Long Lake township is seeking a grant to improve the infrastructure for walking and biking around both Long Lake and Westwoods elementary schools. The goal is to make it safe, convenient, and fun for children, including those with disabilities, to bicycle and walk to school from home or Park & Stroll locations.
When routes are safe, walking or biking to and from school (even if it’s just part of their trip, like when Park & Stroll’ing!) is an easy way to get the regular physical activity children need for good health. Safe Routes To School initiatives also help ease traffic congestion, and air pollution, unite neighborhoods and contribute to students’ readiness to learn in school.
As part of this grant application process, parent and student input is critical.
A walk/bike audit will be conducted at Long Lake elementary on May 2nd after school. This will be an opportunity for parents, students, staff, and administration assess safety for walking, biking and rolling, looking for hazards, and begin to identify possible solutions. Think better traffic calming, crosswalks, bike lanes, sidewalks, lighting etc.
We will break into groups to assess on-site safety at Long Lake for future Park & Stroll locations/routes as well as routes to/from surrounding neighborhoods.
Meet in the library at 4pm.
Training will be provided by the SRTS team. We’ll bring the SNACKS too!
Plan for 1 hour.
